Huge Victory: Aid in Dying preserved in Montana

On 15 April 2013 the Montana Senate defeated bill H.B. 505 , a bill that would have criminalised medically assisted dying and would have mandated prison sentences and fines for physicians who provide aid in dying to terminally ill patients. The vote was 27 to 23 in opposition, after which the Senate also voted to indefinitely table the bill, eliminating the need for a final vote later.

“The senators clearly listened to me and to the citizens of Montana and were open-minded, and I appreciate it,” Dr. Eric Kress, a family physician, said after the vote. He plans to continue to provide aid in dying to terminally ill patients when he thinks it’s appropriate.
