The world has lost a great leader of thought, courage and faith. On December 26, the South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu passed away. Tutu was an anti-apartheid and human rights activist, and won the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize. He was Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, in both cases being the first black African to hold the position.
Tutu was also a strong believer in the right to die with dignity. In 2014, he opened the World Federation Right to Die Societies Conference in Chicago. The same year, he published an article in the Guardian on Lord Falconer’s bill: Desmond Tutu: a dignified death is our right – I am in favour of assisted dying.
