In memoriam: Right-to-die campaigner Lord Joffe

Lord Joel Goodman Joffe (1932) was a right-to-die campaigner who persistently fought in the London House of Lords to have a right-to-die law passed. He died the 18th of June, 2017.

In the Lords, Joel personally sponsored several right to die proposals. A bill was first tabled in 2002, enabling a competent adult who is suffering unbearably to request and receive medical assistance to die. He kept returning to the Lords with amended versions of the bill. His Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill in 2006 caused an intense debate.

During his years in the Lords he offered great support and advice to the campaigns of Dignity in Dying, and continued to do so even after his retirement in 2015.
