WFRtDS Response to Recent Case Involving the Sarco Pod and Assisted Dying

In light of the recent events surrounding the use of the Sarco pod in an assisted dying case, The World Federation of Right to Die Societies (WFRtDS) wishes to acknowledge the complexities and ethical considerations that are arising from this incident.

The use of innovative technologies in assisted dying is a crucial area of discussion in our society today. The Federation represents a varied community of medical, legal and ethical professionals, as well as committed activists and volunteers striving to legalise voluntary assisted dying world-wide. Asun Alvarez, President of the WFRTDS said,

“We must recognize the balance between respecting individual autonomy and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. The death of the 64-year-old woman in Merishausen, while reported to have been conducted peacefully, underscores the urgency of a comprehensive review of our current regulations concerning assisted dying practices and the tools utilized in such processes.

We acknowledge the concerns raised by law enforcement and the legal implications surrounding this incident. It is of utmost importance that the rights and desires of individuals seeking assisted dying are treated with dignity and respect while adhering to established legal frameworks. We believe that thorough investigations and informed discussions are necessary to clarify the roles of individuals and organizations involved in these sensitive situations.

We continue to encourage all stakeholders, including policymakers, healthcare professionals, legal experts, and the public, to engage in constructive dialogue regarding the regulation of assisted dying and the ethical considerations of devices like the Sarco pod. As society advances technologically, it is essential that our laws evolve in a manner that supports both innovation and compassion.

The WFRTDS on behalf of all its Members is committed to working alongside relevant authorities and advocacy groups to explore sustainable and humane pathways for individuals facing terminal illnesses and debilitating health conditions. Our aim is to ensure that every voice is heard, and every option is guided by both ethical considerations and legal standards.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this and reaffirm our commitment to fostering an informed and compassionate discourse on assisted dying”. ENDS
