Australian Capital Territory passes VAD law

The Australian Capital Territory parliament voted overwhelmingly to support the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2023 on June 4th with 20 votes to 5. Federal parliament prevented the ACT and Northern Territory from debating or passing VAD laws for 25 years. The ban was lifted in December 2022 ensuring the government could take measures to pass VAD law. With the exception of the Northern Territory, VAD is legal in the rest of Australia.

In practical terms, this means that Canberrans could access VAD as of November 2025, once the healthcare system has had an 18-month implementation period to prepare for this new law.
