End of Life Washington publish Hospice Map tool

We are thrilled to announce that our long-awaited Hospice Map is officially live and ready for you to use! After years of planning and dedicated work, this innovative resource is designed to empower individuals and their loved ones with critical information when it comes to choosing a hospice that aligns with their end-of-life care needs—especially for those who wish to access the option of medical aid in dying (MAiD) services.

Choosing a hospice is a deeply personal decision, and for many, finding a provider that respects their values and offers a full range of legal end-of-life options is vital. Until now, it’s been difficult for people to know which hospices offer MAiD services or even where those hospices are located within Washington State. That’s all changed with our new Hospice Map.

This map provides a comprehensive view of all the hospices operating across Washington, including details on where they provide services and whether they offer medical aid in dying. The data comes directly from the Department of Health, based on the 2023 update to our Death with Dignity law.

What this means:

For terminally ill individuals: You can easily find hospices that align with your wishes for end-of-life care, including access to MAiD services.

For healthcare providers and referral agents: You can ensure that referrals are made to hospices that meet the needs of your patients or loved ones, avoiding any future confusion or delays regarding MAiD access.

What you can do next: We encourage you to share the Hospice Map widely with your networks—especially with anyone who may be involved in making referrals to hospice care. By asking about the importance of having the option of MAiD services before a referral is made, we can prevent situations where someone must change hospices later in their journey.

While the map highlights many counties that still lack hospices offering MAiD services (those counties are greyed out), we will actively working to support the Certificate of Need applications for hospices that offer MAiD services and want to expand into these underserved areas. We’re also ready and eager to partner with any hospices looking to start or expand their MAiD services. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us for support in these efforts.

Thank you to all of those who contributed the passion and dedication required to bringing this idea into reality and a HUGE thank you to our amazing web developer – Shehan Nattar.

We are incredibly proud to be able to offer this vital tool, and we hope it serves as a step toward ensuring that everyone has access to the end-of-life care they want. Please feel free to explore the map on our website and reach out with any questions or to discuss partnership opportunities.
