Although a majority of France’s National Ethics Committee (8 out of 17!) advised him NOT to let doctors help the terminally ill to take their lives, President Francois Hollande reaffirmed his aim to legalise voluntary euthanasia. He announced a national debate on the issue within a couple of months, and promised his government would submit a bill in Parliament, before the end of 2013, a bill that would go beyond the current (Leonetti) law, that bars doctors from providing such assistance.
