In first for Italy, Tuscany approves right-to-die law

Filomena Gallo comments: ā€œOurs is a law of civilization, obtained thanks to civil disobedience and popular participation. Now let the other Regions approve itā€

The secretary adds: ā€œOn palliative care, we are ready to ally ourselves even with our ‘adversaries’ā€

ā€œWe are grateful to the Councilors of the Tuscany Region for having approved our Liberi Subito law , which defines times and procedures for medical assistance in voluntary death. It is a civilized law, because it prevents the repetition of cases ā€“ most recently that of Gloria , right in Tuscany ā€“ of people who have had to wait for an answer for months, or even years, in conditions of unbearable and irreversible suffering.

The rules approved in Tuscany allow the full implementation of the ruling of the Constitutional Court ā€œCappato ā€“ Antonianiā€ , which legalized in Italy the so-called ā€œassisted suicideā€, under certain conditions. The vote of the Regional Council was therefore possible thanks to the civil disobedience action of Marco Cappato , as well as the signature of almost 10 thousand citizens of Tuscany who activated the instrument of the popular initiative law.

Our goal now is to have the Liberi Subito law approved in all Italian Regions , where ā€œassisted suicideā€ is already legal (in accordance with the rulings of the Constitutional Court), but without any guarantees on times and procedures for sick people and doctors. We are collecting on the Liberi Subito website the availability of those who want to participate in this initiative.

We will also continue to help people shed light on their rights at the end of life through our White Number (0699313409) , through which we also provide information on living wills and palliative care. Precisely on the strengthening of palliative care , to which we have always been committed, we are ready to ally ourselves even with those who have fought against our law, because the right to self-determination is in no way in conflict with the right to care .
