Japan: doctor sentenced for consensual killing

Kyoto doctor Yoshikazu Okubo was sentenced to 18 years for giving a lethal dose of a sedative to Yuri Hayashi, who suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2019. Former doctor Naoki Yamamoto who had assisted Okubo was sentenced to two years and six months.

Okubo maintained that he was fulfilling Hayashi’s wish and that this guilty verdict violates the Constitution’s right to self-determination. In Japan, euthanasia is not legal.
