Lord Charlie Falconer (Labour) introduced a Private Member’s Bill in the House of Lords on 26 July on assisted dying ensuring continued debate on the issue. A bill was first introduced in the UK in 2015 and was voted against by a large margin.
And yet polling suggests that there is greater public support, particularly as many celebrities have recently sought assisted dying, “I’ve been campaigning for a long time on this issue,” he said, “It has never felt for me a more favorable time upon which to try and embark on legislation,” he said.
UK Prime Minister and former human rights lawyer Keir Starmer said prior to and following his election that he would allow time for a debate on the issue, but that he would allow a free vote on the issue, meaning that MPs will not be required to follow party lines.
