What’s good and evil about probate conservatorships – and how to avoid the bad parts

You will hear about the legal side and the victimization side. We will not hear from Brittney Spears but it would be good to read up about her situation. The program will focus on issues of interest to our audience, like what happens to older people who may be alone, and may have some dementia — or whose advance directives are being ignored, or whose children may be battling.  Our words of caution: BEWARE!! In preparation, check out the film, “I Care A Lot.” It’s fiction but scary.
Our panel of speakers will include:
Linda Kincaid, MPH, co-founder of the Coalition for Elder & Dependent Adult Rights.  Linda will tell us about her mother who had dementia and was convinced to cede control of her care and estate to a step granddaughter who obtained conservatorship. The step granddaughter confined Linda’s mother to a locked facility and ordered no visitors allowed other than herself.
Nancy Specter, Certified Specialist, Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law. She is also the former co-chair of the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the San Diego County Bar Association and former board member of the Alzheimer’s Association. Nancy  will speak about planning documents and how to make sure they are not disregarded.
Thaddeus Pope, a leading bioethicist and well-known expert on medical law.
