Colombian court liberalized euthanasia criteria

On Thursday the 22th of July, Colombian judges decided that Colombians who ask for euthanasia are no longer required to be a victim of a terminal illness.

Since 1997, due to a sentence of the High Tribunal [the Constitutional Court of Colombia], euthanasia could be practised in Colombia when four conditions were met:

  1. terminal illnesses
  2. a state of intense pain
  3. a voluntarily done request
  4. performance by a specialist

By the judgement of July 22, the first criterium is no longer required.
