Portugal’s parliament approved MAID legislation

On December 9, the Parliament of Portugal passed legislation authorizing medical aid in dying for the third time.

Last June, Portugal’s parliament voted already for the third time in just over a year in favor of allowing euthanasia.

What’s next?

The bill now goes to the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who can (1) promulgate it, (2) veto it, or (3) ask the Constitutional Court for preventive inspection of the text. The bills require the head of state’s approval to become law. Marcelo plans to decide on the bill even before the end of the year.
