As of November 28th 2023, Voluntary Assisted Death is legal in New South Wales. The new law aims to give terminally ill people in NSW the ability to avoid the extreme suffering many experience at the end of their lives, despite the best available medical care. The law is a conservative model of voluntary assisted dying, limited to people who are terminally ill and whose intolerable suffering cannot be alleviated.
Dying with Dignity New South Wales campaigned extensively to have the law passed in May 2022 and after an eighteen month implementation period VAD is finally being made available.
