The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, based at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia is producing a series of videos on human rights issues called “Have You Got That Right?” The latest episode looks at euthanasia. It begins by illustrating how most people don’t even have to think about this life and death issue in their own lives. It then explains the current state of human rights law (there is no right to voluntary euthanasia but human rights law does allow it as long as certain safeguards are in place) before finishing with a scene depicting then harsh reality of the issue for those wanting to die with dignity (it’s important to watch all the way to the end to get the full message about how serious this issue is) Ultimately the video shows that there is no legal barrier for countries that want to allow safe, voluntary euthanasia.
