Ecuador: euthanasia decriminalised

The staunchly Roman Catholic country became the second Latin American country to decriminalise euthanasia (after neighbouring country Colombia) when its constitutional court voted to allow doctors to help a patient die.

ALS sufferer Paula Roldán contested an article which made euthanasia a homicide with a sentence of 10-13 years. In its ruling the court said, “it would be unreasonable to impose an obligation to stay alive on someone who is going through this situation”.
