Maine: DWD Annual Report 2023

In accordance with 22 MRS § 2140(17), the Department of Health and Human Services
(Department) produces and disseminates an annual statistical report of about patients who have met the requirements of the Maine Death With Dignity Act.

There were 80 patients who started the process; however, four patients died before
completing the request process. The remaining 76 patients met all the requirements of the
Act.

Ages ranged between 31 and 98. In 63% of cases the terminal condition reported was cancer, while ALS was indicated in six deaths, heart disease in five and other conditions included Parkinson’s, Muscular Distrophy, Crohn’s disease, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, multiple system atrophy, and inclusive body myositis.
