This morning we got notice that Els Borst suddenly and unexpectedly died at the age of 81. She was the health minister who can be said to be “the mother” of the Dutch Euthanasia law.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Frans Timmermans reacted on Facebook: ‘ A very sad news. An extraordinary woman with great services to society. Few have made such a great contribution to the medical-ethical debate in Netherlands. Thanks to her our legislation made a dignified end of life possible, one of the most difficult and politically complicated dossiers: The Dutch Euthanasia Law (2002).’
