The Dutch Regional Review Committees have published their Euthanasiacode 2018 in English, French and Spanish.
The official title of this code is: Euthanasia Code 2018. Review Procedures in Practice. As this title indicates, the Euthanasia Code 2018 explains how the review procedures work in practice. Or, as stated in the third evaluation of the Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Review Procedures) Act (‘the Act’) of 2017, the Code gives ‘a practical overview of how the RTEs interpret the due care criteria’.
The issues clarified by the new Code include the degree of independence of the independent physician in relation to the physician who performs euthanasia, as well as the sections concerning patients with psychiatric disorders and those with dementia. In addition, clarification was provided on the scope provided by the Act for patients who request euthanasia in connection with multiple geriatric syndromes.
