South Africa: Ethics institute seeks decriminalisation

Ethics Institute of South Africa’s Professor Willem Landman is approaching the Pretoria High Court in June seeking to halt criminal prosecutions for assisted dying until there is clarity around current legislation.

The court case is supported by doctors Professor JP van Niekerk, Dr Paul Cluver, Dr Edwin Hertzog, Professor Mariana Kruger, Professor Keymanthri Moodley, Professor Jonny Myers, Professor Dan Ncayiyana and Dr Johan Snyman, who indicated their full support For Dignity SA in the February issue of SA Medical Journal.

The recent case of 63 year-old Carol de Swart, who suffered from a botched operation and traveled to Switzerland to seek assisted dying at Exit Swiss Assistance Programme, is the subject of a Netwerk24 documentary which has received tremendous public support.
