Together with her son and members of the right-to-die association Luca Coscioni, Sibilla Barbieri, a 58 year-old Italian woman actress with terminal cancer, went for assisted dying to a clinic in Switzerland after being denied permission to end her suffering in Rome.
According to the medical panel that rejected her request, she was not permitted to seek assisted dying as she was not reliant on life-support treatment.
The Luca Coscioni Association has campaigned for years to obtain legislation in Italy giving patients access to assisted dying. In the absence of legislation, the association has accompanied a number of people to Switzerland to seek a dignified death.
