About the society.

Friends at the End is a Scottish charity that promotes understanding of end-of-life choices and campaigns for assisted dying to be allowed in Scotland and the rest of the UK. It was founded in 2000 by a group led by Dr Libby Wilson, who served on the World Federation's board and received its Health Professionals award in 2010.

Its main aim is to work with MSPs on assisted dying legislation in the Scottish Parliament. It has helped MSPs bring forward three bills, most recently backing Liam McArthur MSP's bill, which the Parliament voted down in March 2026. It also sponsors the Parliament's Cross-Party Group on End of Life Choices.

Alongside the campaign, it offers practical help and companionship to people nearing the end of life and their families: advance care planning, guidance on advance directives and powers of attorney, free counselling, and local groups across Scotland.
