On Thursday September 16, Queensland has become the fifth Australian state to legalise voluntary assisted dying! Parliament voted to pass the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021 into law without amendment, 61 votes to 30. About 50 amendments were proposed and debated but none of them succeeded.
After Tasmania and South Australia, Queensland was the third Australian state this year where VAD was legalised. 17 million Australians now live in a state with VAD law.
The law now heads to the Governor for royal assent. It will come into effect in Jan 2023.
