Results from international research project published

We’d like to inform you about the publication of two (Italian written) volumes resulting from an international research project which lasted three years (2020-2023), entitled: “Euthanasia in the multidisciplinary prism: law, medicine, bioethics, philosophy, literature, linguistics” (“L’eutanasia nel prisma multidisciplinare: diritto, medicina, bioetica, filosofia, letteratura, linguistica“).

The volumes are co-directed by Stefano Calabrese, Stefano Canestrari, Berenice Cavarra, Carla Faralli, Monica Lanzillotta, Adelmo Manna, Lucia Risicato and Hanna Serkowska. Numerous Italian and foreign scholars of law, medicine, bioethics, Italian studies, etc. participated in the project. who reflected on death “suspended” by medical nutrition and hydration devices and on death “anticipated” by euthanasia practices.

The first volume, entitled ‘The point on euthanasia – From law to literature’ (‘Il punto sull’eutanasia. Dal diritto alla letteratura’), represents one of the few interdisciplinary dialogues on the topic of euthanasia and contains five essays written by literary scholars, which constitute a unicum in Italian studies throughout the world:

  1. Intendendo morire by Stefano Calabrese;
  2. L’eutanasia nei graphic novels by Valentina Conti;
  3. La Ballata di Adam Henry. Un caso esemplare di “diritto e letteratura by Carla Faralli;
  4. Il romanzo e il racconto “di eutanasia” fra fine Ottocento e surmodernità by Angela Francesca Gerace and Monica Lanzillotta;
  5. Conoscere l’ora e il giorno. La cinematografia sullo sfondo dell’eutanasia by Hanna Serkowska.

The second volume, entitled ‘Towards the exit – Transmedia file on euthanasia’ (‘Verso l’uscita. Schedario transmediale sull’eutanasia‘), represents a sort of global observatory on texts (novels, short stories, comics, graphic novels, theatrical, cinematographic and musical works) dedicated to euthanasia from the late nineteenth century to the present day.
The transmedia index is divided into three sections: the first contains the texts recorded so far (the name of the scholar who compiled the index is indicated in brackets); the second includes the catalog of works potentially oriented towards the theme of euthanasia which we intend to catalogue, updating the volume from year to year, also with the support of those who want to help us, well aware that the texts “absent” from the catalog are numerous ; finally, the third section contains the works that we have taken into consideration and decided to exclude because the plot does not concern the theme of euthanasia as we have understood it, but is taken in the broader meaning of “liberation” or “abolition”.
The index is therefore “liquid” because the publication is fluidized over time.

Below you find the (Italian) pdf of both volumes, containing the cover, Introduction and Index.
