Update on New York and Massachusetts

This June, the Death with Dignity National Center published a State Legislation Report on Massachusetts and New York. In these states, Death with Dignity bills have been under consideration last month:

  • Massachusetts: Over the last few weeks, residents of the Commonwealth sent over 1600 letters to legislators, urging them to prioritize passing the End of Life Options Act (S.1384). And, efforts have paid off. The Joint Committee on Health Care Financing has extended the deadline for the bill until July 31.
  • New York: The New York State Legislative session ended on June 3 and unfortunately, New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act (A.4321/S.6471) will not advance this year. While this is disappointing, supporters and advocates made a tremendous impact during this session, sending over 3600 letters to lawmakers and gaining legislative support.

Death with Dignity National Center:

“In every place where Death with Dignity is currently legal, we have fought and won long campaigns that span multiple years. We will continue our efforts year after year until legislation is passed.”
